The Himalayan nation's Electoral Landscape Witnesses Major Partnership Forged By Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable move ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Tackle Youth Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the grievances raised by the new generation. This promise follows the violent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which led to significant loss of life.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.

The September uprising was sparked by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding allegations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the Fresh Political Agreement

According to the formal agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political class. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in forming the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Wider Government Discussions Underway

In a related event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with a number of major political leaders. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the protests.

Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and open environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
